money man

Sammo literally nickel and dimed his way up to 100 bucks. He has been saving since the beginning of the summer and he finally made it! In the beginning he was convinced that it was best to have an abundance of pennies, it looked like more money of course. As time went on, he realized the tediousness of counting pennies and was introduced to the amazing gold dollar coin. He wanted as many as he could because he thought it looked like pirate treasure. His little coin collection grew and he would write down his running total on every free piece of paper he could find. Each time we went to the store and he spotted toys that he wanted, he would always put it away like a sweet, good natured miser. When he finally put that last 5 cents in his piggy bank, you would have thought it was his birthday, Christmas morning and y2k all over again. He could not contain his elation and had little tears in his eyes. We went down to the bank to change his money once again into a 100 dollar bill.
It's been about a week now and he still hasn't spent it, but he has clutched it, and stared at it and told everyone he can think of about it. So far, he doesn't have any real idea of what he wants to buy, but he knows he likes having money and has a new goal... 200. He did mention tonight that he thinks he wants to save up for a trampoline. :) what do you think he should buy?

This makes my heart all warm and fuzzy for some reason?? I guess I am just a proud auntie! He has such an adorable personality! He is so smart! Can you imagine having a $100 bill at five years old??!! I remember grandma giving us $10 for our bday and mom taking us to the shoe store right away! Maybe that is why I never learned to save.
I will have to take a lesson from this little "Miser".. I love you Sammo!

You know, lots of banks will give you $100 for opening an account with them. We did it with Chase bank. He could open an account, get another $100 on top of his, and then save for college. :)

Ya know, if you weren't my friend, I would so lay in wait for him, and rob him.

It's amazing that a kid his age would possess $100, let alone earn it himself. to heck with a college fund! coax him into a retirement fund for his darling parents. With his money smarts, you guys could have a pretty sweet setup.
