Hubs: "So I have 3 days off in a row ... we need to do something great!"
Me: "Yeah, I'm up for whatever ... what do you have in mind?"
Hubs: "Well, I was thinking that we could drive 10 hours, through mostly the nothingness-that-is Wyoming, til we get to South Dakota. There we will find a wondrous place that holds the most venomous snakes of any place in the world!"
As the three days vividly played out in my head and I tried to determine which would be more fun: A screaming, bored-to-death-of-driving Sophie or viewing an entire zoo of only reptiles and best of all snakes. I tried desperately to plaster a smile on my face and take deep breaths and be a good sport about it all.
But in the end, I said, "Why don't just you and Sam go?" Hubs said, "Really? Are you sure?"
I was sure
So Stevie did it ... he drove to S. Dakota ... saw the snakes ... and won best daddy that ever happened in one fantastic three-day weekend.
He took his 11-year-old nephew Michael with him too.
Sam had the time of his life. He packed his own personal "carry-on" of-sorts and got to keep it by him on the car ride. He had a little allotment of souvenir cash and with each treasure he scored along the way, he laid it out neatly on his hotel night table so he could view his loot as he drifted off each night. He got to handle a few snakes, and see a real-life Black Mamba, Gaboon Viper and Fierce snake. He even got to see a daddy and mommy alligator "wrestle." What an education!
Soph and I had some good one-on-one time and she would say frequently, "Daddy, Sam on a tripper ... in-a upakota"

fun! steve is brave to take a roadtrip with two small boys. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you made the right decision.
